I have 10 thousand to invest and am not looking to get rich quick, or take a huge risk. Any suggestions?
I have virtually no bills, a house already paid off, no student loans, and am getting ready to head to Iraq or another tour. I wants to invest for a 12 month period and get a decent return.

I would put 5k in an ISA, and 5k into a green power generation/utilities company.

There is risk everywhere right now. Nonrisky investments wont give you any return after inflation. I would go with stock market because it sounds like you have enough giong for you that if the market is down for 3 years or something you will be able to wait it out.

take not chances and find a good cd at your bank. 12 month cd is about 4.5 to 5 percent. you could get about 35-45 extra bucks per month.

that is hard to do right now. The banks are not paying well but a C.D. is a safe investment. Maybe you should contact fidelity or some other investment firm and open a Roth IRA. With a Roth you can always access any of your money that you invest when ever you want. You can’t access the profits that your money earns until you are like 59.5. All contributions are pre taxed so there is no tax bill on your earnings when you remove the money at retirement age.

i’d listen to biker dude, I recommend an online brokerage firm that has good beginner qualitys {like tutorials or an easy to understand set up}, i use zecco, better then schwab, etrade, etc. they are the only ones with free stock trades, no minumums..all the others will charge you fees for trading, but compare and see for yourself. Good luck and happy investing!

The stock market is currently in a BEAR phase.
Actually I would put it in a one year Treasury.
Treasuries have actually outperformed the stock market over the past year and I expect it to continue for another year.
In a recession CASH IS KING!!!
Now is NOT the time to take risks with your money.

First off: Good Luck in Iraq! There is risk in every investment. Even cash can loose purchasing power due to declining dollar and inflation. I would suggest three of the things in which I have invested,
1) For growth, 36 shares of Apple, Inc. @$160 (symbol: AAPL ) which should have a GREAT year with very strong iMacs and iPhones sales. I expect it will grow 20% in value this year.
2) Growth and Income: 100 shares of First Bank, Inc of Maine @$17/$18 (symbol: FNLC ). This little bank has none of the problems effecting the big national banks, and It has little competition in the small towns it serves. It has increased its dividend EVERY QUARTER in the past 13 years (51 consecutive quarters). Earnings up over 12 % last quarter.
3) Growth and Income: 3 shares of Huntington Bankshares Non-Cumulative, Convertible Preferred @ $800.00 per share (symbol: HBANP ). This is a play on an eventual recovery of the parent, Huntington Bank, in Ohio. Bank is acting better of late and this preferred will pay a quarterly dividend of $21,25 per share for an annual yield above 10%. The kicker here is that as HBAN gets back in shape, the preferred probably will be bought back by Huntington in a few years, at a 40% premium.

If you want the possibility of high returns, you should invest in stocks. However, if you want to play it safe, mutual funds would be a better choice because they are more diversified. Plus, they are professionally managed so you don't have to worry about what stocks or bonds to buy or sell.
Either way, if you invest in stocks or mutual funds, you will need to open a brokerage account. I personally prefer online discount brokers simply because they are cheaper. I currently use Firstrade ( http://www.firstrade.com/ ). They are cheaper than big name brokers such as Etrade, Scottrade, Ameritrade, and Schwab. They have excellent customer service and a very easy to use website. I've been using them for years now and have been very satisfied with them.
I would not recommend using Zecco. They may have 10 free trades a month, but they were rated worst in the research and customer service categories by SmartMoney. See for yourself: http://www.smartmoney.com/brokers/index.cfm?story=smartmoney-annual-broker-survey-2008&split=0
Firstrade currently has a refer-a-friend program, so if you're interested in opening account with them, email me for a referral code. It's a win-win situation because you'll get your first 5 trades free.
